Safety is not a premium option.

skyBlip exists so that every aircraft is visible to the others, whatever its budget.

The problem

Mid-air collision remains one of the most serious accidents in light aviation, and one of the most avoidable. Making yourself visible has been possible for years. But it is expensive, the systems do not talk to each other, and it often takes a subscription.

Affordable.

Equipment only helps if it is on board. We start from consumer hardware, mass-produced, and nothing costs anything afterwards.

Open source.

The code that broadcasts your position, receives the traffic and sounds the alarm is public. Anyone can read it, check it, fix it.

Compatible.

ADS-L is the open standard published by EASA. skyBlip also receives FLARM traffic, rather than going its own way.

The vision: every flight visible to all

  1. Aircraft to aircraft.

Two skyBlips see each other with no infrastructure at all. Every equipped device makes the sky easier to read for the others.

  2. With the gliders.

They already fly with FLARM, tracked by the Open Glider Network. skyBlip receives them, and skyPost stations will exchange with OGN.

  3. Club by club.

A skyPost station on the roof of a flying club will cover the field and the circuit, and relay airliners.

  4. Every flight.

From the light aircraft to the paramotor, broadcast in ADS-L. Not because it is mandatory, because it is useful from the first flight.

What comes next

“Position broadcast, traffic reception, alarms and ground uplink are and will stay open source, free and without subscription.”

The skyBlip commitment

Thanks

skyBlip builds on ten years of open work by the free-flight community. Thanks to the authors of the projects we learned from.
