skyBlıp

Open-source electronic conspicuity for general aviation.

Flying VFR, everyone watches for the others through the canopy. skyBlip adds a second pair of eyes: a small device that announces your position by radio and receives everyone else’s. Nearby traffic shows up on the skyBlip’s own screen, on your tablet or on your panel display, and an alarm warns you when an aircraft converges.

Each skyBlip keeps a track of your flights in its memory. Back on the ground, open your browser and connect over Bluetooth: your flights download in seconds, with no app and no account.

Airliners and a large share of touring aircraft already announce their position over ADS-B. skyPost ground stations receive those announcements, add the traffic from online networks such as the Open Glider Network (OGN), and rebroadcast the whole picture to the skyBlips in flight. One station on a club roof covers the field, the circuit and the surroundings; the solar version mounts on a simple mast.

In short

skyBlip and skyPost implement ADS-L (ADS-L 4 SRD-860, Issue 2), the electronic conspicuity protocol published by EASA for the licence-free 868 MHz band.

ADS-B is neither re-implemented nor transmitted on 1090 MHz: it is received on the ground by the skyPosts, then relayed over ADS-L. The skyPosts exchange traffic with the Open Glider Network in both directions.
